Central Illinois

Springfield is our state capitol and home to many large state agencies. Lt. Governor Quinn and the Illinois Green Government Coordinating Council are helping more than 60 of these agencies make their operations more environmentally friendly to protect the health of Central Illinois residents. It’s easy to be green. Find environmentally friendly solutions for your home and community here.

In July, 2005, Lt. Governor Quinn launched a successful on-line petition drive to save the natural areas around Banner, Illinois, from a proposed strip mine development. Find out more about the Banner Marsh/Rice Lake natural areas and the nearby national scenic byway here.

Lt. Governor Quinn and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have teamed up to help schools across the state create rain gardens.  These low-cost projects protect our waterways and prevent flooding. Grants have been given to more than twenty schools including the St. Patrick School in Decatur. Find out more about the Illinois Rain Garden Initiative here.
