(Regional Optical Cooperation)
ROC-net is not just any broadband Internet serviced provider. Modeling itself after the twentieth-century electric cooperatives, the Rockford-based company intends to bring affordable, universal broadband connectivity to a ten-county region in Northern Illinois.
ROC-Net kicked off its Ten County Broadband initiative in January by launching wireless connectivity throughout eight square miles of Rockford. Residents and visitors now have access to affordable Internet service at up to ten times the speed of other companies’ services.
Working with local technology firms, local and county governments, educational institutions, and public health facilities, ROC-Net is providing much-needed services, including:
- Telehealth access, working with Swedish American Hospital.
- Mobile communications for First Responders, working with Prairie SHIELD.
- A carrier-class network capable of meeting the needs of residents and businesses of all sizes.
At the heart of ROC-Net is a sincere commitment to the Rock River Valley Region. According to ROC-Net founder and Rockford resident Tammy Eighmy, “Access to world-class telecommunications will bring Northwest Illinois much needed economic development. This collaborative effort between industry, public sector, and private sector groups can be a springboard for the region to tackle and accomplish other challenges it is facing.”
