Carl Schurz High School

This school on Chicago’s north side is serious about sustainability.

Students at Carl Schurz take a very active role in sustainable practices, boasting a student environmental that has been active for several years. Each year, the club organizes Earth Day activities, informing students at Carl Schurz about the importance of recycling, explaining the water cycle and water pollution issues, and promoting overall environmental awareness. Carl Schurz students have in the past participated in the River Congress, working with younger children nearby on water-related service projects.

Last year, Carl Schurz High School students constructed a pond in the school yard. This year, after receiving a rain garden grant, the school will be constructing a rain garden to filter and absorb storm water using native plants that have deep root systems. Your school can build a rain garden, too!
