Each year, more than 250,000 Americans die from sudden cardiac arrest.  Many of these deaths could be avoided if automated external defibrillators (AEDs) were readily available.  Lt. Governor Quinn is leading the Heartsaver Campaign to make AEDs as common as fire extinguishers.

Lt. Governor Quinn supported the Colleen O’Sullivan Law, which requires every indoor physical fitness facility to have heartsaving AEDs on site.

The legislation is named for Colleen O’Sullivan who died in 2002, at the age of 30, from cardiac arrest during a routine workout. She had no history of heart disease.

Quinn also helped create the Heartsaver Trust Fund which provides up to 50 percent matching grants for AED purchases by public schools, universities and park districts.
