Standing Up for Illinois - Office of Lt Governor Pat Quinn

Rolling On the River

The Rock River

Your tour of the Rock River starts at the Main Street community of Prophetstown

Start off by visiting the Prophetstown State Recreation Area. This location is where Wa-bo-kei-shek, the prophet to Black Hawk, once had an Indian village.

Also overlooking the Rock River is a Cannon and Bell Historic site. The Cannon is a US Navy-3 inch howitzer mounted on a naval field carriage.

Continue on the Rock River to the new Main Street town of Sterling. Sterling's waterways are well stocked with catfish, walleye and sauger. You can also enjoy boating and water skiing in nearby Lake Sinnissippi.

Your next stop is the Main Street town of Dixon. Not only is Dixon home to President Ronald Reagan, Dixon is also located in the heart of the Rock River Valley, which makes it home to both history and river recreation.

While in Dixon, make sure to visit Lowell Park. Located along the Rock River with 240 acres, Lowell Park is complete with a nature center where people of all ages may learn more about the nature of the Dixon area. Also, don’t forget to see the Pride of Oregon. This authentic paddlewheel boat is 102 feet of elegance and charm, which features music, cocktails, dancing and fine dining.

The River District Association in Rockford helps the workers, visitors and residents of the downtown River District experience the charm of Northern Illinois’ cultural, economic and retail hub.  The Association promotes several cultural and entertainment events each year in venues around the Rock River.
