Museums - Southern Region Tour

There are seven Illinois Main Street communities in southern Illinois that have museums. They are Mt. Vernon, Murphysboro, Carbondale, Marion, Eldorado, Golconda and West Frankfort .

You can start your southern Illinois Main Street Museum Tour in Mt. Vernon. Make sure to stop at the Mt. Vernon Genealogical Society’s C E Brehm Memorial Library. Here you’ll find genealogical and historical materials reflecting southern Illinois residents. Call for hours of operation (618) 242 6322.

Head southwest of Mt. Vernon to the Main Street community of Murphysboro.

Take the family to the General John A. Logan Museum (1613 Edith Street). Here you’ll learn about the life of General John A. Logan who was the only political General to lead an army during the Civil War.

From Murphysboro, travel to nearby Carbondale. Stop by the Science Center Museum (1237 East Main Street). This museum provides science education for children. It offers highly interpretive exhibits, classes and after school programs. Call for hours of operation (618) 529 5431.

Leaving Carbondale, travel east to Williamson County and visit the Main Street town of Marion. Stop by the Williamson County Historical Society (105 South Van Buren). Learn about local Marion history. The museum is open April thru November on Thursdays from 9am to 3pm.

Continuing your southern Illinois Main Street Museum Tour, visit the Main Street town of Eldorado. Here you’ll find the Eldorado Historical Museum (PO Box 435). Call for hours (618) 273 7109.

Travel south of Eldorado to Pope County and the Main Street town of Golconda. You’ll enjoy visiting the Pope County Historical Society Museum (112 North Columbus Ave).

Learn more about the rich history of Golconda or schedule a city tour to take in all the sights. The Pope County Historical Society Museum will enrich you!

You can end your tour of Southern Illinois museums in West Frankfort.  The Veterans Depot (100 West Main Street) is dedicated to the men and women of the West Frankfort area who have served their country during the time of war. The collection includes military paraphernalia from the Civil War to the present.  The nearby Frankfort Area Historical Museum (2000 East St. Louis Street) preserves the history of the area.
