Federal Earned Income Tax Credit

The Federal Earned Income Tax Credit is available if:

  • Your household earnings are less than $34,548 (single-head of household) or $35,548 (married filing jointly) and you are raising two or more children in your home. You can get up to $4,300 larger refund or reduced taxes!
  • Your household earnings are less than $30,338 (single-head of household) or $31,338 (married filing jointly) and you are raising one child in your home. You can get up to $2,604!
  • Your family earnings are less than $11,490 (single-head of household) or $12,490 (married filing jointly), if you have no children, and you are between the ages of 25 and 64. You can get up to $390!
  • The State EITC has the same eligibility requirements and is worth up to 5% of the federal EITC.

If you have children submit IRS Schedule EIC along with your Form 1040 or 1040A. If you don't have children, no schedule is necessary, apply on your regular tax return. The state EITC can be applied for on your state return.

If you want general assistance from the Internal Revenue Service call 1-800-829-1040. If you are an individual with income less than $15,000 or a household with income less than $40,000 you may be entitled to free tax assistance.

Each year, the Lt. Governor's Office funds taxpayer assistance clinics that provide free tax counseling to people who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Check back on this page after January 1, 2008 for site locations and times.
