CHICAGO - November 12, 2008. Lt. Governor Pat Quinn joined with students, teachers and service-learning practitioners from 42 school districts at the 2008 Illinois State K-16 Service-Learning Conference.
"Service-learning allows students to become engaged learners in the classroom and leaders in their communities," Quinn said. "I am proud to salute all 42 districts here today for their commitment to education and service."
The one-day conference, to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature general sessions, breakout sessions and student exhibits designed to celebrate the achievements of students, staff and community partners in service-learning projects across the state.
Service-learning is an instructional method in which students learn and develop through active participation in community service. By connecting public service to the academic curriculum, students grow into real-world problem-solvers. Forty-two Illinois communities and more than 52,341 students currently take part in the Learn and Serve America grant program, jointly administered by the Lt. Governor's office and the Illinois State Board of Education.
Quinn was joined by Dr. Shelley Billig, Vice President of RMC Research Corporation. Dr. Billig is nationally recognized for her research on the impact of service-learning on student achievement and civic engagement.
