QUINCY – April 18, 2008. Lt. Governor Pat Quinn joined with Quincy-area school children for a day filled with fun and environmentally friendly activities at the John Wood Community College’s 2nd Annual Earth Day celebration.

“I am proud that even the youngest Illinois citizens are learning to maintain a healthful environment for the benefit of this and future generations,” Quinn said.  “We want to salute John Wood Community College for seeking to educate the entire community about the benefits of green living.”

The John Wood Community College 2nd Annual Earth Day “field day” aims to engage elementary school children in fun, outdoor activities that teach the value of a sustainable, environmentally friendly lifestyle.  From 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., on the Friday before Earth Day, Quincy-area fifth graders were invited to participate in an afternoon filled with hands-on activities, giveaways and demonstrations on topics ranging from wind turbines and solar energy to hybrid vehicles and water testing.

Lt. Governor Quinn, John Wood Community College President Dr. William Simpson, and Quincy Director of Planning and Development Chuck Bevelheimer saluted the following schools for taking part in the Earth Day celebration: Baldwin Intermediate Schools, Blessed Sacrament School, Brown County Middle School, Pleasant Hill Community Unit District #3, Pikeland School, St. Dominic School, St. Francis Solanus Elementary School, St. Peter Elementary School, and Quincy Christian School.

And that’s not all. From 3:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., adults were invited to join the fun with vendors, demos and environmentally friendly activities open to the general public.

In addition, the John Wood Community College hosted an all-day recycling bonanza, encouraging residents and businesses to bring all recyclables – including small and large electronics – for safe and environmentally sound disposal.

General recycling will be welcomed all day. Electronics recycling for businesses took place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and electronics recycling for the general public was from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Small electronics (VCRs, DVDs, computer monitors, batteries) were accepted free of charge, and large electronics (big-screen TVs, washers, dryers, dishwashers) were accepted for a small fee.
