October 26, 1825
The Erie Canal opened today to allow ships from the Atlantic Ocean to have a direct water connection to the Great Lakes. This allowed for a 50 percent decrease in commodities travel time to Illinois.

Freedom of Information Act

The Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) helps citizens obtain information about government activities. The Act guarantees citizens access to government records while preserving the privacy of individuals and protecting inherent governmental needs.

Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn is committed to protecting the rights of Illinoisans to obtain information about their government by complying with the requirements of the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. Quinn also maintains Constituent Services offices in both Chicago and Springfield to help citizens obtain services and information from other government agencies.

Illinois Freedom of Information Act requests for documents held by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor should be sent to:
