Helmets to Hardhats

This Tuesday, August 28, 2007, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn will join high-ranking union leaders and more than 100 Illinois corporate partners in announcing the Helmets to Hardhats Job Fair for returning veterans, to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Navy Pier.
Quinn will be joined at the event by International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 786 President Mike Yauger, AFL-CIO Building and Trades Department President Edward C. Sullivan, Illinois Department of Transportation Deputy Director Roy Dolgos, Helmets to Hardhats Executive Director Darrell Roberts and other union officials.
I want to salute these union representatives, state officials and corporate citizens for their willingness to work together to give our returning heroes this opportunity to meet with the many employers who are seeking trained, mature, experienced workers, Quinn said. Thanks to partnerships between state and corporate employers and union leadership throughout the Land of Lincoln, Illinois is recognized as a national leader in this program to help our veterans find the good jobs they deserve.
The Helmets to Hardhats Job Fair will include a number of employers, including the Illinois Department of Transportation, who are offering immediate positions to Illinois veterans. The Fair also will feature a number of union skilled trades apprenticeship programs, offering veterans the opportunity for on-the-job training.
Helmets to Hardhats is a national, federally-funded program created in 2003 to offer careers in the building and construction industry to military servicemembers who are returning from active duty. The program is sponsored by 15 building and construction trades unions, along with several national construction industry employer associations.
All of us here on the homefront have a responsibility to these brave Illinois men and women who have answered dutys call and fought to protect our democracy, Quinn said. The solid team effort that Illinois unions and employers have put behind Helmets to Hardhats demonstrates to our nation the value and importance of giving our returning veterans the opportunity to build solid new careers.
