DuQuoin Main Street Ceremony

This Wednesday, August 29, 2007, Lt. Governor Pat Quinn will salute the community of Du Quoin for its efforts to revitalize and restore its downtown area.  After more than a year of working with area businesses and local residents, Du Quoin will be officially inducted into the Illinois Main Street program.

Quinn will unveil the Illinois Main Street community sign.  Signs soon will be placed at town entrances.

We salute the Du Quoin residents who have volunteered countless hours to build up downtown Du Quoin, Quinn said.  This community has proven that it is indeed a unique place to visit, shop, play and live.

Residents and visitors alike are enjoying the many new events taking place in the downtown Du Quoin area.  The Du Quoin Heritage Days Festival has started again, and not even the coldest day of November could keep 400 Du Quoin residents from taking part in a Veterans Day Parade last year.

Many more downtown improvements are on the horizon because Du Quoin is now offering workshops for businesses, including financial aid and design assistance.

Quinn will be joined at the designation ceremony by Mayor John Rednour, Main Street Board Secretary Peg VanSchnydel, and Main Street Executive Director Pamela Pereira.

Du Quoin is just another example of how hard work, volunteerism and dedication can keep a strong community going, Quinn said.

There are now 68 communities in the Illinois Main Street program.

The Lt. Governors Office administers the Illinois Main Street program that is based on a national model that offers communities help with issues such as downtown improvements, historic preservation and economic development.  Illinois is one of 40 states that belong to the National Main Street Program, administered through the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Illinois Main Street represents one of the state's most effective public-private partnerships for economic development and community renewal.  Since its inception, designated communities have reported net gains of more than 1,600 new downtown businesses and created more than 6,000 new full and part-time jobs.  The Main Street program has spurred the reinvestment of more than $575 million in Main Street downtowns.
