Ronald Humbert

            Illinois citizens are accustomed to voting in many elections. But none was as unique as the state�s first ever-online election � for an official state reptile and amphibian. In the summer and fall of 2004, more than 75,000 votes were cast in this unique example of e-democracy. The Eastern Tiger Salamander (amphibian) and Painted Turtle (reptile) slithered their way to victory!

            None of this would have happened if it weren�t for the tireless advocacy of Ronald Humbert, past president of the Chicago Herpetological Society, who worked with schools across the state to educate students about the ecological importance of amphibians and reptiles.

            Humbert was able to see his dream come true when the General Assembly ratified the election and made the will of the people the law of the land. Sadly, Ron died from pancreatic cancer a few months after passage of the law.

            Ron Humbert will be remembered for his dedication of lifelong learning and the excitement for nature he held instill in countless children.
