Green Government Awards

On Tuesday, December 11, 2007, during the Sustainable Government Symposium, Lt. Governor Pat Quinn will present eight Green Government Awards to state agencies that have achieved notable progress toward sustainability. The symposium and awards ceremony, which are hosted by the Illinois Green Government Coordinating Council, will be held at the Department of Natural Resources Building, Lake View Rooms A & B, One Natural Resources Way.

The Sustainable Government Symposium is designed to facilitate the exchange of ideas among state agencies and to learn how to develop a sustainability plan to comply with the new Green Government Illinois Act (Public Act 95-0657).

The Green Governments Illinois Act was enacted on October 17, 2007. It charges the Illinois Green Government Coordinating Council with working with state agencies to create a sustainability plan to reduce pollution, incorporate green policies into government operations, and conserve resources for current and future generations.

The 2007 Green Government Award recipients are:

Illinois Department of Employment Security for Energy Efficiency

Central Management Services for Green Facilities

Illinois Department of Revenue for Green Office Practices

Illinois Department of Corrections at Menard Correctional Center for Green Purchasing

Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois Medical District Commission for Innovative Projects

Illinois Tollway for Sustainable Construction

Central Management Services for Waste Reduction

Illinois Department of Human Services for Water Conservation

I salute all the agencies that are represented here today not just those who received awards for realizing the importance of making our state more sustainable, said Quinn, who chairs the Illinois Green Government Coordinating Council. We can all learn from one another and work together to make the Land of Lincoln green.

Following the awards presentation, representatives from state agencies will participate in the daylong symposium, alongside local government officials, university representatives, architects and concerned citizens who will discuss sustainable practices that can be implemented to reduce their environmental footprint.
