FutureGen

FutureGen is an initiative to build the world's first integrated sequestration and hydrogen production research power plant. The $1.5 billion project is intended to create the world's first near zero-emissions fossil fuel plant. When operational, the prototype is designed to be the cleanest fossil fuel fired power plant in the world.

The prototype plant in Mattoon will establish the technical and economic feasibility of producing electricity and hydrogen from coal, while capturing and sequestering the carbon dioxide generated in the process.

Upon the announcement of Mattoon as the host site, Lt. Governor Quinn said, I am very pleased by the decision to build the $1.5 billion FutureGen plant in Mattoon. We hope this promising new technology will make it possible to create a coal-fueled, near-zero emissions power plant to meet our energy needs in the 21st century.

We know that FutureGen will provide an important boost to the economy of Illinois, creating thousands of jobs. If the innovative technologies in this public-private venture prove successful, this prototype plant will be a model for the world, demonstrating that it is possible to capture carbon dioxide safely underground instead of emitting it into the atmosphere.

We look forward to the day that FutureGen makes it possible to burn Illinois coal and meet Illinois energy needs without damaging the environment of our state.
