Lazy Crazy Hazy Days on Main Street

SPRINGFIELD With sultry June weather inspiring thoughts of family vacations, outdoor concerts and long lazy afternoons, Illinois Main Street communities are gearing up for a busy and fun summer season.
The summertime promotions begin with Illinois Main Street Day on Saturday, June 2, an annual event officially created by the Illinois General Assembly. The program also is launching a new website, Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days on Main Street, featuring special events and activities in Illinois 69 Main Street communities from June 1 through July 4.
With gasoline prices going through the roof, its great to let people in Illinois know how much fun they can have without leaving the Land of Lincoln, said Lt. Gov. Pat. Quinn, who chairs the Illinois Main Street Advisory Council.
This new website will help Main Street communities attract tourists who want to save gasoline while theyre enjoying a summer weekend getaway.
The Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days on Main Street promotional information is available through the program website, www.IllinoisMainStreet.org, which is being featured in an ad in the June issue of Midwest Living Magazine. Visitors to the website will find a detailed calendar of events complete with photos of Illinois Main Street communities many museums, parks, historic landmarks and other attractions.
IllinoisMainStreet.org also offers dozens of recommended tours, including trips through Route 66, Dixie Highway and Amtrak communities.
We hope visitors to this new website will be inspired to spend some time this summer exploring Illinois historic and charming Main Streets, Quinn said.
I know those tourists will find plenty to do and a warm welcome in every Main Street town they visit.
In February, more than 100 representatives from Illinois Main Street communities the largest number ever -- joined Lt. Gov. Quinn in Springfield for a rally to meet with legislators and celebrate their successful efforts to revitalize their historic downtown districts.
Main Street helps communities appreciate the treasures in their midst, and fosters a spirit of volunteerism, a sense of place and a new civic pride," Quinn said at the February rally,
The Main Street program is helping to revitalize downtown spaces statewide, and we are reaching far and wide across Illinois to provide assistance to more communities.
The Office of the Lt. Governor administers Illinois Main Street, a comprehensive community revitalization program that promotes historic preservation and economic development of the state's traditional business districts.
