Libertyville Best Place to Live

The City of Libertyville, an Illinois Main Street community, has been honored by inclusion in MONEY Magazines renowned list of the Best Places to Live in America, highlighting the positive impact that a historic, thriving downtown can have on a communitys quality of life.

"This year, Money magazine focused its Best Places to Live list on Americas smaller towns and cities the types of communities the Illinois Main Street program is designed to help preserve, develop and showcase to the nation," said Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn. "We are very pleased that the magazines editors appreciate Libertyvilles historic charm and lively downtown business district."

In ranking Libertyville No. 52 on its top 100 list, featured in its upcoming August issue, Money magazine noted: "Libertyville is committed to preserving its historic downtown (which consists exclusively of brick buildings, thanks to a 1895 fire ordinance)," and cited the Illinois Main Street program as an important factor in the communitys historic preservation efforts.

Libertyville, a city of 22,700 about an hour north of Chicago, prides itself on offering some of the regions best shopping, along with a number of well-regarded restaurants. The citys intensive efforts to preserve and promote its historic downtown shopping district earned Libertyville the Great American Main Street Award.

Illinois Main Street represents one of the state's most effective public-private partnerships for economic development and community renewal. Since its inception, designated communities have reported net gains of more than 1,600 new downtown businesses and created more than 6,000 new full and part-time jobs.

The Main Street program has spurred the reinvestment of more than $575 million in Main Street downtowns. Illinois is one of 40 states participating in the National Main Street program, administered through the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Lt. Governors Office administers the Illinois Main Street program, now the fourth-largest in the nation, with architectural assistance from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
