On Saturday, October 13, 2007, Lt. Governor Pat Quinn will dedicate Cory Hubbell Way to honor a 20-year-old soldier who died while on active duty in Kuwait in 2003.

The dedication ceremony will be held at the home of Spc. Hubbell’s mother, Connie Bickers, at 1805 County Road CD 2200 E in St. Joseph.

“I thank Army Spc. Cory A. Hubbell for his service to our country, and I commend his family and friends for keeping his memory alive,” Quinn said. “It is my honor to dedicate Cory Hubbell Way to recognize his patriotism and his sacrifice.”

Quinn will be joined at the dedication service by Cong. Tim Johnson (R-Urbana), Sen. Mike Frerichs (D-Champaign), Rep. Bill Black (R-Danville) and St. Joseph Mayor B.J. Hackler. Spc. Hubbell’s brother, Cody Bickers, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the dedication.

U.S. Army Spc. Cory A. Hubbell, of Urbana, enlisted in June 2001 after graduating from Urbana High School. He was a Carpentry and Masonry Specialist with B Company, 46th Engineer Battalion, which was deployed to Kuwait on February 10, 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Spc. Hubbell died of an unknown breathing problem in Kuwait on June 27, 2003.

In his two years of service, Spc. Hubbell was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.
