Financing Your Improvements
Investing in energy efficiency will make your business more profitable. But the investment may take some time to pay off, so how do you finance the improvements?
SBA Loans
Does your business qualify for a Small Business Administration loan? SBA 7A loan guarantee programs can back loans used for energy efficiency improvements. Ask your SBA lender about the Microloans, and SBAExpress loans programs or call 1-800-8-ASK-SBA.
Historic Buildings
There are a variety of tax credits available for improvements to historic buildings. You can preserve the historic character of the building and make it more energy efficient. Contact the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency at (217) 785-4512, or see www.state.il.us/HPA for more information.
Tax Deduction
Many equipment upgrade projects can qualify you for capital cost tax deductions. Ask your tax professional for advice.
Large Projects
Do you have a particularly big project in mind? If so you should consider contracting with an Energy Service Company. These companies evaluate your building for improvements, arrange financing and manage the project. They are paid a portion of the savings you get from the improvements. Contact the National Association of Energy Services Companies at www.naesco.org or (202) 822-0950 for more information and referrals.
