Service-Learning Professional Development Opportunity
Introducing “The Box”: A Comprehensive Staff Development Program aligned with the K-12 Service-learning Standards for Quality Practice.
Service-learning is an instructional method in which students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized community service. The Box provides everything needed to train and support teachers in service-learning. Developed by educators for educators, this kit is organized in nine modules that can each be delivered in ½ hour, I hour, or 2 hour sessions, depending on the professional development time available. Each module includes PowerPoint presentations, engaging training activities and scores of ideas that can be used in the classroom.
The Illinois K-12 Learn and Serve America (LSA) program has adopted The Box as its primary tool for delivering basic training in service-learning across the state, and for building capacity at the local level to replicate that training. This workshop is the first of a series of at least three regional programs that will be offered in 2008-2009. Every Illinois K-12 LSA project that is represented in one of these regional workshops will be provided with a complete set of these training materials and an opportunity for at least one of its staff to participate in a training-of-trainers institute in the summer of 2009.

River Rats Golf Classic - Downtown Beardstown

Beardstown Main Street and A Gaudio Distributing in co-operation with the following Beardstown Pubs and Eateries are hosting The First Annual River Rat Golf Classic. Lookers Sports Bar, Becky’s River Look Tavern, Anne’s Sazarak, Beardstown Elks Club, Mile 88 Pub, Café From Yesterday and The Central Tavern will each host one hole of miniature golf. Foursomes will compete for prizes and fun for a good cause. Entry forms for teams may be obtained at any of the participating establishments and the Main Street office at 206 Washington Street Beardstown, IL (phone 217 323 5479). Entry fees are $25.00 per person and teams must be four people only.The event will benefit the restoration of the Beardstown Grand Opera House. Beardstown Main Street Inc, a non profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Beardstown’s historic downtown area, is promoting this event as part of an ambitious schedule of events for 2009.
