Lt. Governor Quinn salutes CUB with Hometown Hero Award on its 25th Anniversary

CHICAGO - December 3, 2008. Lt. Governor Pat Quinn celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) by presenting the organization with a Hometown Hero Award for its commitment to protecting Illinois consumers.
"Twenty-five years ago, voters in 114 Illinois communities passed an advisory referendum, letting their elected officials know that everyday consumers deserve a non-partisan, non-profit organization working on their behalf against the powerful, well-funded utility companies," said Quinn, who spearheaded the effort. "That historic referendum led the General Assembly to create the Citizens Utility Board - Illinois' leading consumer watchdog organization."
CUB has since saved consumers more than $10 billion by blocking rate hikes and winning refunds for taxpayers. Thousands of Illinois gas, electric and phone customers turn to CUB each year to cut through utility company red tape. On average, phone bill customers can save as much as $500 per year by consulting with CUB.
"CUB has provided a strong and intelligent voice for Illinois consumers," Quinn said. "We are proud to honor its 25 years of dedicated service."
Quinn was joined by David Kolata, CUB Executive Director. The Lt. Governor's Hometown Hero Award is given to citizens and organizations whose commitment, self-sacrifice, and nobility of purpose have contributed to the greater good of our Illinois communities.
